Checklist for an Efficient Outdoor Kitchen Design

Does your house the place all your friends and family seem to wind up on weekends and special occasions? Rather than piling in the house, take the party outdoors. If you don’t already have an outdoor living area, you might be wondering where to start. Whether you decide something basic or a larger, custom project, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Outdoor living always seems to center around a built-in grill island with plenty of outdoor kitchen doors and drawers, but there’s a huge variety of other things you can add depending on budget, space limits and cooking style.
  • Outdoor Cooking: After you decide on a grill, think about what other types of cooking you will be doing. There are side burners, smokers, power burners, searing burners, pizza ovens, and the list goes on and on. Go back to your budget and space limits and make some tough decisions.
  • Outdoor Kitchen Ventilation: If your outdoor kitchen will be below a roof, overhang, gazebo, etc., pay close attention to manufacturer’s clearances to combustibles. You might need a vent hood. Similarly, if the grill island with outdoor kitchen doors and drawers is made of combustible construction, an insulating grill jacket might be needed.
  • Cooling Appliance: Don’t forget, it’s not just about cooking. You can really spice up your outdoor living enjoyment with a refrigerator, ice maker, wine cooler, kegerator or beverage center. These are all great for entertaining. Who doesn’t love cold beer on tap? It also reduce your trips back and forth to the kitchen.
  • Grill Accessories: You’ll find that outdoor living is somewhat of a learning experience, and despite all your careful planning you’ll continue to add accessories for cooking, serving and cleaning. Be sure you have enough outdoor kitchen doors and drawers to allow you some room to grow.
